SPAIN – basic information

Spain, officially the Kingdom of Spain (Reino de España) is a country located on the Iberian Peninsula. It borders to the west with Portugal, to the northeast with Andorra and France and to the south with Gibraltar. Spanish territory also includes the Canary Islands in the Atlantic Ocean and Balearic Islands (Mallorca, Menorca and Ibiza) in the Mediterranean Sea. Furthermore the Catalan town of Llívia is a Spanish exclave situated inside French territory.

Spain is well developed industrial-agricultural state. It cultivates 37 % of its territory, 14 % are grasslands and 33 % is forested. Generally overrules the plant production with concentration on growing of cereal crops (6,6 million hectares in year 1998), olives and grapevine. However the biggest contribution comes from growing greengrocery.


Spain can be divided according the climate into four areas.

The coast of Mediterranean Sea is warmest at east and south part of the country. Moderate summers with pleasant temperatures (Murcia, Malaga, Valencia, Alicante, Palma de Mallorca).

Inland - very cold winters and very hot and dry summers (Sevilla, Madrid, Albacete, Burgos, Salamanca).

North Atlantic coast – severe winters with serene summers (little bit colder ones) (Bilbao, La Coruňa, Gijón, Oviedo).

Canary Islands – subtropical weather with pleasant temperatures over the whole year.


The beaches are sandy and pebbly. The shore can be plain and serene but also with steep sea cliffs. There are big bays and small inlets hidden among the rocks as well. You can visit also fishing ports, brisk coastal promenades and watchtowers.
